HIV prevention is effectively achieved with pre-exposure prophylaxis, known as “HIV PrEP”. This is an oral daily regimen in which patients take one pill every day to reduce the risk of HIV transmission by more than 99%.

Some people compare the method with birth control pills. Women who do not want to get pregnant, take one pill a day. In the case of HIV PrEP, people who do not want to get infected take one pill a day. Is that easy!

Who is at risk?

Essentially, any person having unprotected sexual encounters could be exposed to HIV. However, high-risk individuals are:

  • Men who have condomless sex with men
  • Transgender individuals
  • Heterosexually active persons who have condomless sex with partners who are either HIV positive or of unknown HIV status
  • People who have been diagnosed with another sexually transmitted infection in the last year (i.e. chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, trichomonas, monkeypox).
  • People who inject drugs
  • People who exchange sex for money

How do I get started?

If you are having any symptoms like fever, chills, night sweats, skin rash, abdominal or pelvic pain, genital pain, lesions, discharge, or burning with urination, schedule your appointment with a Lunera provider today (via Telehealth or In-Person).

Upon starting PrEP, all patients should be tested for HIV, STIs, and receive basic labs to evaluate blood counts, liver, and kidney function.

If you do not have any symptoms, and are interested in starting PrEP today, schedule your appointment with a Lunera provider today (via Telehealth or In-Person). Click here to schedule an appointment.
A Lunera Health provider will order labs and start HIV PrEP while you wait for results.

If you just want to do labs without a doctor’s appointment, click here to get lab orders. A lunera provider will call you in approximately 3-5 days with your results and will send your PrEP prescription if appropriate.

What is the cost of PrEP?

PrEP is covered by most commercial insurance, Medicare, and Medicaid plans. If there is a copay responsibility, the pharmaceutical company may offer copay assistance programs, and you could still be eligible to obtain PrEP for free.

If you do not have insurance, you may still qualify for assistance programs that cover the cost of the medication for uninsured patients.

How often do I get the PrEP prescriptions?

Continuing PrEP is extremely easy!
You will get labs every 3 months followed by a virtual or in-person appointment with a Lunera provider, after which you will get your 90-day prescription.
